Though his tangled love life scandalized his contemporaries, Burns was much loved by people from all levels of society and was a great champion of the common man.
Burns had a particular gift of evocative imagery, and his writing is distinctive in the way that it makes an emotional connection with the everyday and the commonplace. In addition to his wonderful poems, Burns was a prolific songwriter, matching his lyrics to traditional Scottish fiddle tunes.
